The trial operation of a permanent shiplift on the Three Gorges Dam in central China's Hubei province began on Sep. 17, 2016 .

The shiplift, designed by a Chinese and German team, is the largest and most sophisticated in the world.

The beginning of its trial operation marks the completion of the Three Gorges project 22 years after construction on the mammoth project began.
